Triumph Tiger 110 Motorcycles

The Triumph Tiger 110 was a British sports motorcycle first made by Triumph at their Coventry factory between 1953 and 1961. Developed from the Triumph Thunderbird, the T110 first appeared in 1954. Although it was supposed to be the sports model of the Triumph range, the Tiger 110 was later fitted with the rear panelling introduced with Triumph's 350cc 3TA twin in 1959. This rear cowling earned it the nickname 'bathtub' from its shape and made the T110 look somewhat staid. In any event, from 1959, the T120 Bonneville was now Triumph's leading sports model and before the introduction of Edward Turner's unit construction 650cc twin in 1962, the T110 was dropped from Triumph's range.

Development
The Triumph Tiger 110 650 cc OHV Twin was Triumph's fastest production motorcycle to date, developed for the American market which wanted a higher power output. The T110 was first built in 1953 and introduced as a 1954 model. Originally produced with a cast iron cylinder block and head, this was quickly replaced with a light alloy cylinder head with special airways to improve cooling and austenitic iron valve seat inserts. The external oil feed pipes were also replaced with internal oilways via the pushrod tubes.
The Triumph Tiger 100 was named because it was capable of 100 mph (160 km/h), so it was an obvious marketing idea to call the new bike the Tiger 110 - although technically the best one way speed obtained by The Motor Cycle magazine in tests was 109 mph (175 km/h) - but the speedometer was reading 114 mph (183 km/h), so there was a margin of error.
By 1959, the Tiger 110 was no longer Triumph's fastest model, the dual carburettor Bonneville T120 having taken its mantle. Triumph added the enclosed panels from the Twenty One which, resembling an upside-down Victorian slipper bathtub, earned the bike the nickname 'bathtub'.

Matchless G12

The Matchless G12 is a British motorcycle made by Associated Motorcycles at the former Matchless works in Plumstead, London. Developed in 1958 specifically to capture the potentially lucrative US market, the last G12 was produced in 1966.

Development
Matchless G12
The Matchless G12 was one of the last motorcycles under the Matchless name and was also produced as the AJS Model 31 by the same company. Designer by Phil Walker, AMC knew that it had to be a 650 cc (39.7 cu in) but wanted to use as many parts from the Model 11 as possible. The cylinders could not be bored out further so the stroke was lengthened from 72.8 to 79.3 mm (2.87 to 3.12 in), resulting in a capacity of 646 cc (39.4 cu in). This meant developing a new crankshaft and primary chaincase, which also provided the opportunity to add a Lucas alternator. Volume production began in September 1958.
Matchless G12 De Luxe
In 1959 the G12 was redesigned and modernised as the De Luxe with a new full cradle tubular duplex frame and a new cylinder head. Vibration had always been a problem, so the crankshaft was upgraded to nodular iron. Capable of 100 mph (160 km/h) performance, the G12 became popular with the American market.
Matchless G12 CS
The Matchless G12 CS (sometimes referred to as the CS X) was an off-road version of the Matchless G12 with improved ground clearance and a slightly upswept exhaust and an 8.5:1 compression ratio. It was not a trials competition machine but instead aimed at the 'desert racer' market in the US.
Matchless G12 CSR
The Matchless G12 CSR designation officially stood for "Competition/Sprung/Roadster," the same nomenclature used with the G80 and G50 models. It is mistakenly referenced as Competition/Sport/Road. It was dubbed the Coffee Shop Racer by its rivals. With its distinctive two-into-one 'siamese' exhaust system and upgraded camshafts the CSR was a high performance motorcycle with what was, at the time, a high compression ratio of 8.5:1, distinguishing it and the G12 CS from the other G12 models, having a 7.5:1 compression ratio. The factory diverted Chief Engineer Jack Williams from AJS 7R development to address the problems with leaks and vibration and modify the bikes for racing - with the result that Ron Langston and Don Chapman won the prestigious Thruxton 500 long distance endurance race on the AJS Model 31 counterpart to the G12. Encouraged by this victory in 1963 the G12 CSR gained the name Monarch and twin carburettors (the AJS version was renamed the Hurricane).
Matchless G15/45
In 1964 the CSR gained Norton brakes and forks, and the following year a Norton Atlas 750 cc (45.8 cu in) engine replaced the trouble prone AMC unit. In 1962 and 1963, AMC had produced a limited run of 212 touring motorcycles of 738 cc (45.0 cu in) displacement using an enlarged version of the G12 AMC-designed engine, but these bikes—which were given the model designation "G15/45"—proved even less reliable than the 650 cc (39.7 cu in) version when ridden hard. So AMC's original plans to develop a 750 cc desert racer version were abandoned. If successful, this could have saved the company as there was a huge un-met demand in the US for powerful desert racers to compete in endurance events. By this time the company were in financial trouble and production ended in 1966.

BSA Spitfire

The BSA Spitfire was a high-performance Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) motorcycle made from 1966 to 1968 with model designations of MkII, MkIII and MkIV. Announced at the Brighton motorcycle show held during September 1965, it was based on the earlier BSA Lightning with a power-upgrade achieved by higher compression-ratio 10.5:1 pistons and two large-bore Amal GP carburetors with velocity stacks it was one of the first BSAs to have 12-volt electrics. At introduction in 1966, it was the fastest standard BSA ever produced and the fastest standard motorcycle tested by Motor Cycle with a best run at 123 mph and average of 119.2 mph The Spitfire was used for travelling Marshalls' course duties at the 1967 Isle of Man TT races.

Development
Spitfire MkII

The first A65S Spitfire of 1966 was confusingly designated MkII and had a number of new features including two-way damped front forks, Girling shocks and a brace between the downswept exhaust pipes. A 190mm front drum brake improved braking and lightweight alloy rims reduced the weight to 174 kg.

The bike was supplied as a sports-tourer with raised handlebar, forward-mounted rider footrests, a large dual seat with race-styled hump, and the glass-fibre fuel tank and side panels covering the oil tank/tool compartment and battery were finished in Peony Red. The UK Spitfire had a conventional four gallon tank, with a large five gallon option from 1967.

A selection of factory extras were available to enable the model to enter Production Races, including a fairing and single racing seat. Two large-bore Amal GP carburetors with velocity stacks improved acceleration but made the Spitfire hard to kick start when the engine was hot, so owners chose to replace them with Amal concentric carburetors with more conventional round air filters and this became the factory supplied specification in 1967. Keen to boost sales in the US market BSA produced a special Spitfire with a two gallon fuel tank following the trend set by the Harley Davidson Sportster.

Spitfire MkIII

For the 1967 Model Year (MY) the Spitfire was upgraded and designated as Mk111. The racing Amal GP carbs with open-intakes (bellmouths) were replaced by Amal Concentrics with individual chome filters which enabled better low-range engine response. The fuel tank was enlarged to five UK galllons, which hampered both spark plug and carburetor accessibility. Both Mk11 and Mk111 carried the traditional BSA 'flash' side-panel badges.

Other modifications were Amal alloy (aluminium) control levers with click-stop cable adjusters, production of which BSA took-over from Amal, marketed under their 'Motoplas' accessories branding, and the Zener diode voltage regulator was installed in an aluminium heat-sink mounted high on the front frame tubes to benefit from the cooling airstream. The 1968 MK1V Spitfire was the last made. Amal’s new Concentric carburetors were combined with twin-leading-shoe front brakes and independently adjustable Lucas ignition points for easier starting. Post-War twins BSA

All BSA parallel twins were pushrod operated overhead valve machines. The A7 and A10 models were semi-unit construction until about 1953 and pre-unit construction thereafter. All A50, A65 and A70 models were unit construction.

The BSA A7 was a motorcycle made by Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) at their factory in Armoury Road, Small Heath, Birmingham in 1946. There were two versions of the A7, the original 495 cc (30.2 cu in) version, and an improved 497 cc (30.3 cu in) version launched in 1950. Although its name was changed to the Star Twin and later the Shooting Star the BSA A7 continued in production with minor modifications until 1961.
Development
Designed by Val Page, Herbert Parker and David Munro, the BSA A7 was the first of the BSA twin-cylinder motorcycles and was ready for launch in 1939, but the outbreak of World War II delayed the launch until September 1946 when hostilities ended. The very first A7 off the production line was flown to Paris for the first motorcycle show after the end of the war. slogan 'It's time YOU had a BSA!'.

Engine
The 495 cc (30.2 cu in) twin cylinder engine produced 26 bhp (19 kW) and was capable of 85 mph (137 km/h).
A single camshaft behind the cylinders operated the valves via long pushrods passing through a tunnel in the cast iron block. This system needed a considerable number of studs and nuts to fasten down the cylinder head and rockerboxes, many of them deeply recessed and requiring well-made box spanners or the then uncommon sockets. As with other British motorcycles of the period, this kind of set-up regularly led to oil leaks.
Most motorcycles of this period tensioned the primary chain by drawing or rotating the gearbox backwards on a hinge with threaded rods, this was known as pre-unit construction. The first A7 had a fixed gearbox, bolted to the back of the crankcase, and an internal tensioner for the duplex primary chain. This gave it the appearance of unit construction and pioneered the system later used in unit-construction engines such as the BSA C12/C15, BSA B40, Triumph 3TA and so on. However, in 1954 a re-design reverted to the older system.
The electrics (as was universal for larger British motorcycles of the period) consisted of two independent systems, the very reliable and self-contained Lucas magneto, with a dynamo generator to charge the battery and provide lights. Carburation was a single Amal remote float Type 6 until 1955 when it was upgraded to a 376 Monobloc.

BSA A7 'Star Twin'

In October 1949 BSA also launched the Bert Hopwood designed 650 cc twin cylinder BSA A10. Although resembling the A7 500 cc twin, it had a revised engine design and a new A7 soon followed, based on the A10 - in response to competition from the Triumph Tiger 100. Launched as the BSA Star Twin SS the new model had twin carburettors and increased compression ratio. It also had the latest design of cylinder head with austenitic steel inlet and exhaust valves. The uprated engine was fitted to a plunger frame and finished extra chrome. Both models were produced with an option of rigid or plunger frames until 1954 and the introduction of a pivoted fork frame. The new frame also led to a separate gearbox to replace the bolted on version.
BSA A7 'Shooting Star'

In 1954 the Star Twin was redesignated the Shooting Star with a new swinging arm frame and the engine further developed by reducing the stroke to 72.6 mm and increasing the bore to 66 mm, giving a slight increase in capacity to 497 cc.
By the end of production in 1961 the BSA Shooting Star was the culmination of the development of the BSA A7, with a deep bottle green colour scheme with light green tank, mudguards and side panels, it had an alloy cylinder head, a duplex cradle frame with swinging arm rear suspension, full-width light alloy hubs and 8-inch drum brakes. Engine compression was upgraded from 6.6:1 to 7:1 and power was up to 30 bhp (22 kW) at 5800 rpm, with a top speed of just under 90 mph (140 km/h).

BSA Golden Flash
The BSA Golden Flash was a Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) motorcycle. The Golden Flash was also available in black and chrome, but it was the all-over gold paint scheme that gave it the name, and made it such a popular escape from post war austerity. Its development after the 1937 launch of the ground breaking Triumph Speed Twin, together with the need to pay off British war-debt, led to the two creating the post-war rise of the parallel twin engine layout, which was to dominate British design throughout the 1950s and 60s.

Development
In May 1948, Hopwood joined BSA. Briefed specifically to create a competitive parallel-twin, the internally designated A10 model was based on an earlier A7 design by Page and Bert Perkins. After BSA took over Triumph in 1951, Hopwood returned to Norton. Early Golden Flash A10s had frames with either no rear suspension, or plungers, and had a semi-unit engine and gearbox, with the gearbox bolted to the rear of the engine Launched in October 1949, the A10 Golden Flash was a new post-war design, with most of the difference to the A7 being in the engine. Increased to 650 cc (40 cu in), it encompassed revised castings for the cylinder head and rocker box, and a cast-in carburettor manifold. The frame was available in rear rigid format, but the more common option was the then new plunger suspension, specifically designed for overseas export.
BSA was a manufacturer who focused on machines for the working man, and so the design incorporated two practical use features: a hinged rear mudguard, designed to ease rear wheel removal; and a semi-unit engine and gearbox arrangement. The semi-unit power train enabled the primary chain to be adjusted via a slipper within the primary chain case.

Production
The large carry over of parts from the A7 had the advantage of greater reliability, as it minimised the risk of any new technical problems. Launched in a new form of gold colour, the combination of reliability and marketing made early exports possible, with 80% of production destined for the USA. The result was long delivery times for British customers, who were offered a more practical and less stand out black.
Although never designed as a fast machine, the Golden Flash was nonetheless fast for its time and competitive with the Triumph Tiger 100, achieving over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) in tests in 1950, and covering a standing quarter mile (400 m) in under 16 seconds. Its gold colour also made it a marketing and sales success, out selling the red Speed Twin and the later blue-grey Triumph 6T Thunderbird, which was resultantly revised the following year into polychromatic blue.
However, BSA were concerned about a tendency for wear in the rear, plunger suspension, leading to uncertain handling. In 1954 it revised the model with a modern swinging arm, and the hinged mudguard was deleted. The semi-unit power train was also abandoned, making for a more involved procedure for adjustment of the primary chain, it offered benefits in the areas of the clutch and gearbox internals. The revisions also allowed for the launch of more sporting A10 Road Rocket. In 1956, alloy brake drums were fitted as standard which both reduced unsprung weight and increased stopping power.
Later transfer-style Golden Flash badge In 1957, the 40 bhp (30 kW) 105 miles per hour (169 km/h) BSA Super Rocket was launched for the 1958 season, with an Amal TT carburettor and high lift cam.
The final A10 development, and fastest in terms of power and performance, the 1962 BSA Rocket Gold Star, which fitted a tuned A10 Super Rocket engine into the well proven BSA Gold Star single frame. The result was a good handling fast bike that was a true classic. Current demand for the Rocket Gold Star, or "RGS", is such that non-RGS A10s are sometimes sold as originals, having been modified using suitable alternative parts.
With the launch of the new unit-construction (combined engine/gearbox) BSA A50 and BSA A65, the A7 and A10 were discontinued at the end of 1962 but the Rocket Gold Star continued into 1963 production.

Norton Motorcycles

Norton Motorcycle Company (formerly Norton Motors, Ltd.) is a British motorcycle marque, originally from Birmingham, founded in 1898 as a manufacturer of "fittings and parts for the two-wheel trade". By 1902, they had begun manufacturing motorcycles with bought-in engines. In 1908, a Norton-built engine was added to the range. This began a long series of production of single and eventually twin-cylinder motorcycles, and a long history of racing involvement.

Wartime WW2 production of the military Model 16 H and Big 4 sidevalve motorcycles was Norton's contribution to the war effort, almost 100,000 being manufactured.
When major shareholders started to leave Norton in 1953, the company declined and Associated Motor Cycles bought the shares. Although motorcycle sales went through a recession in the 1950s, and Norton Motors Ltd was only a small manufacturer, Norton sales flourished. A series of Norton Dominator Twins of 500cc, then 600cc, then 650cc and then the 750cc Norton Atlas kept sales buoyant, especially with sales to the USA.
In 1968, the new 750cc Norton Commando Model appeared, with the engine/gearbox/swingarm unit "isolastically" insulated from the frame with a series of rubber mountings. This kept the vibrations from the rider, giving a smooth comfortable ride. The Commando was a best seller, and voted #1 Motorcycle of the Year a number of times in Britain. 850cc Models appeared for 1973, giving more torque. And for 1975 an electric start arrived in the 850 Mk3.

The largest UK motorcycle manufacturer at the time was BSA-Triumph, comprising Birmingham Small Arms Company in Birmingham, and Triumph Motorcycles in Meriden. BSA-Triumph faced difficulties caused by poor management, outdated union practices, old-fashioned motorcycle designs and antiquated factory conditions. A merger with Norton Motorcycles was proposed; but although Dennis Poore's Norton Motorcycles was by far the smaller partner, Poore effectively secured a take-over of BSA-Triumph, forming Norton Villiers Triumph (NVT). The Triumph factory Meriden was the least modern; but workers engaged in a "sit-in", forming a workers' co-operative. Poore was CEO of Manganese Bronze Holdings, a company apparently more concerned with asset-stripping than with motorcycle production. Subsequent political manoeuvrings led to the downfall of NVT, as taxpayer-assisted wranglings over amalgamations and sell-offs all but killed the once-massive UK motorcycle industry.
In late 2008, Stuart Garner, a UK businessman, bought the rights to Norton from some US concerns and relaunched Norton in its Midlands home at Donington Park where it will develop the NRV588 racer, a machine styled after the Norton Commando, and a new range of Norton motorcycles, with options including 1,200 cc Superbike, and 750 cc Supersport variants.
Beginnings
The original company was formed by James Lansdowne Norton (known as "Pa") at 320, Bradford Street, Birmingham in 1898. In 1902, Norton began building motorcycles with French and Swiss engines. In 1907, a Norton ridden by Rem Fowler won the twin-cylinder class in the first Isle of Man TT race, beginning a sporting tradition that went on until the 1960s. The Isle of Man Senior TT, the most prestigious of events, was won by Nortons ten times between the wars and then every year from 1947 to 1954. The first Norton engines were made in 1908, beginning a line of side-valve single-cylinder engines which continued with few changes until the late 1950s.
The first Norton logo was a fairly simple, art nouveau design, with the name spelled in capitals. However, a new logo appeared on the front of the catalogue for 1914, which was a joint effort by James Lansdowne Norton and his daughter Ethel. It became known as the "curly N" logo, with only the initial letter as a capital, and was used by the company thereafter, first appearing on actual motorcycles in 1915. Ethel Norton also did some testing of her father's motorcycles. In 1913 the business declined. R.T. Shelley & Co., the main creditors, intervened and saved it. Norton Motors Ltd was formed shortly afterwards under joint directorship of James Norton and Bob Shelley. J.L. Norton died in 1925 aged only 56, but he saw his motorcycles win the Senior and sidecar TTs in 1924,specifically with the 500cc Model 18, Norton's first overhead valve single.
Designed by Walter Moore, the Norton CS1 engine appeared in 1927, based closely on the ES2 pushrod engine and using many of its parts. Moore was hired away to NSU in 1930, after which Arthur Carroll designed an entirely new OHC engine destined to become the basis for all later OHC and DOHC Norton singles. (Moore's move to NSU prompted his former staff to quip NSU stood for "Norton Spares Used") The Norton racing legend began in the Thirties: Of the nine Isle of Man Senior TTs (500 cc) between 1931 and 1939, Norton won seven. Until 1934, Norton bought Sturmey-Archer gearboxes and clutches. When Sturmey discontinued production Norton bought the design rights and had them made by Burman, a manufacturer of proprietary gearboxes.
Nortons also appealed to ordinary motorcyclists who enjoyed the reliability and performance offered by single-cylinder engines with separate gearboxes. The marque withdrew their teams from racing in 1938, but between 1937 and 1945 nearly a quarter (over 100,000) of all British military motorcycles were Nortons, basically the WD 16H (solo) and WD Big Four outfit with driven sidecar wheel.
Post war
After the Second World War, Norton reverted to civilian motorcycle production, gradually increasing its range. A major addition in 1949 was the twin cylinder Model 7, known as the Norton Dominator, a pushrod 500 cc twin-cylinder machine designed by Bert Hopwood. Its chassis was derived from the ES2 single, with telescopic front and plunger rear suspension, and an updated version of the gearbox known as the "lay-down" box. More shapely mudguards and tanks completed the more modern styling to Nortons new premium model twin. Post war, Norton struggled to reclaim its pre-WWII racing dominance as the single-cylinder machine faced fierce competition from the multi-cylinder Italian machines and AJS from the UK. In the 1949 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, the first year of the world championship, Norton made only fifth place and AJS won. That was before the Featherbed frame appeared, developed for Norton by the McCandless brothers of Belfast in January 1950, used in the legendary Manx Norton and raced by riders including Geoff Duke, John Surtees and Derek Minter. Very quickly the featherbed frame, a design that allowed the construction of a motorcycle with good mass-stiffness distribution, became a benchmark by which all other frames were judged.
Norton also experimented with engine placement, and discovered that moving the engine slightly up/down, forward/back, or even right/left, could deliver a "sweet spot" in terms of handling. Motorcycle designers still use this method to fine-tune motorcycle handling. In 1951, the Norton Dominator was made available to export markets as the Model 88 with the Featherbed frame. Later, as production of this frame increased, it became a regular production model, and was made in variants for other models, including the OHV single-cylinder machines.
Manx Nortons also played a significant role in the development of post war car racing. At the end of 1950, the English national 500 cc regulations were adopted as the new Formula 3. The JAP Speedway engine had dominated the category initially but the Manx was capable of producing significantly more power and became the engine of choice. Many complete motorcycles were bought in order to strip the engine for 500 cc car racing, as Norton would not sell separate engines. The racing successes were transferred to the street through cafe racers, some of whom would use the featherbed frame with an engine from another manufacturer to make a hybrid machine with the best of both worlds. The most famous of these were Tritons - Triumph twin engines in a Norton featherbed frame.
